Patriotism and other known issues

Its yet another Independence anniversary for Nigeria and i have been thinking: what  should i ramble about? Nothing pops up in my cheezy breezy weezy brain…..so i carried out a survey with two friends.

Sunday, my naughty friend suggested i write on “patriotism”. I declined because that would amount to betraying my conscience going by the connotative implication of the word “patriotism” hence, i cant say for sure ‘how patriotic i am’ judging by the fact that; i never recited the national anthem during NYSC orientation in camp; never remembered the nation in my sparingly morning devotion; have never worn anything green white and green(don’t even know what that connotes) and i have never made any known sacrifice for the nation aside forfeiting my meals in camp……so Mr. Sunday. What is patriotic about me to be patriotic when patriotism is not viewed from the perspective of the innateness school of thought?.

Mr. Suleiman suggested i, (his exact words) “write about the urgent need for a change of leadership, orientation of the masses about the brewing crisis come 2015 and a host of other known issues”.

What my hommy meant by “host of other known issues is what am yet to decipher, since there was no known conference organised to itemise known issues after the Kutigi led romance that just ended and is already known.

Then as for his protest for a change of leadership, am wondering; could he be referring to a shift in political party? (I don’t think so, hey! No way, this dude is too sensitive not to know that the ruling party and the oppo-attacking are thesame; could he be referring to the military taking over power? Nah! That guy enjoys his swags and freedom of expression and choice, especially with matters unconnected with the opposite sex, no way he will advocate for TYRANTS

Maybe he was referring to the youths. But how can that be? I remember him telling me during our undergraduate days….”oboy if i  get dey opportunity na to enrich myself and my family oh…no time” ( his exact word). How can the same person advocate for his types to take over the helms of affaire for change..nah.

Prediction of some slapsticks comedians

Less i forget, he equally mentioned the orientation of the masses against  the brewing crisis come 2015. Why the question of who the masses are in Nigeria is making the local pharmaceutical store in by neighborhood rich in the sales of paracetamol each time i search my head for the answer. I think the Anus-Horribilis of some slapsticks comedians from the south who are planning genocide  and the division of Nigeria should there son not return to power come 2015, or the ongoing political genocide by the scariest element in the north should not be viewed as brewing crisis or the mindset of the masses (just thinking aloud).

With my glass of champagne raised acknowledging; Nelson Mandela, Fella Kuti, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Shehu Shagari, Ngugi, Brutus, Achebe, Soyinka, Gever Celestine, Kayode Teslim, Ogujobi Jeremiah, Ifeoluwa, Timi Yesiebo, wordpress, Suleiman Isiaka, Dickson Ajogu, Opeyemi, my humble self and other black heros who fought and are still fighting for the physical freedom of the black ràçe…….i wish you guys a happy independence anniversary………thanks for flying with me.

  1. Wow Freeman Daniels you are quite one with words. What suprises me is that it doesn’t suprise me to know that u did not recite the national anthem at the NYSC camp. Well knowing you I am not suprised you pulled that off although I expected that such a feat would surprise me because I remember we recited that I think every morning with the exception of one or two at most. You are a consistently amazing spectacle of pure wonder. Its good to read ur write up, as it makes me feel like we are still together though we are miles appart. I didn’t comment initially on your previous posts because I am with good cause sort of paranoid but that is a matter for another time. Good job and Keep holding the pen strong my tough buddy and pal.

Sir newtonton…..your paradoxical diction caught my attention here and I can’t help but laugh….am happy to know that my ramblings connects us….that’s one of the power of writing I wish to unravel its mistery and take full advantage of in future to creat a global sphere of reach with friends around the world but until then….I hope to do the little I can to connect in the little way I can.

Why I can’t say for sure what level of patriotism is enough in this country where better is appreciated in situations that best is unnegotiable…. I can say for sure that showing patriotism in your own little way and influencing others to do same will go a long way to change the public image and enhance PR of our motherland… Thanks for being here and hope you stay……..peace

  4. If i’m to paraphrase your title, it will run like this: “where are the patriots in Nigeria?” or i may as well put it this way: “my patriotism story: a joke in action.” That’s my opinion anyway.

However, whenever issues of patriotism is being raised, what often comes to my mind is: where are the patriots? I for instance cannot “categorically” tell you that i am qualify to be one, not even the president of Nigerian. Now don’t get me wrong, i’m not judging here and at the same time, i’m not in any way saying there are no patriots in Nigeria. Of course, there MAY exist but a hand full.
To cut my story short, i think the only way patriotism can be inculcated into Nigerians is when we practice what we preach, as Black Eyed Peas once sang. Let our livestyle preach what we want the world to know.
Now here is what i observed about your write up: you are a good writer, no doubt but i’ll advice you keep your grammer simple, short and precised. You often use too many high-sounding words, which on a closer look could makes your work looks disjointed. And i’ll advice you make sure your title tallies with the body of your write up.
Mind you, i’m not in anyway critising your work, but you need to keep in mind that the purpose for you writing is not to impress anybody, but to pass a message. So, if as a result of trying to educate or enlighten your reader, you end up confusing them, it shows you’ve not yet communicated.
Lest i forget, i’ll also like you to visit my blog: http://www.healingthebrokenworldbythespokenword.wordpress.com and let me know what you think. Though, my write up is strictly motivational for now. Hope to hear from you soon.
    Yours truely

    1. Lol. Dr Fresh….thanks for the observation with my syntax… The two titled you suggested…..I think my ramblings took a dimension of the second. “My patriotism story: a joke in action”. But what I did was to take a tittle that will bring together the suggestion from my survey of two friends…as for criticism….the truth remains that I prefer those who tell me what I need to improve on than those who just overlook my loophole and praise me…they are the ones who doesn’t really want my progress….and really…I will work on my writing style since my rambling is not meant impress but to entertain and inform while communicating..I promise to check your blog out, though am not that type of person that really fancy anything “motivational” or “how to do it yourself”. I maintain the principle of “self motivation is the best form of motivation” hence if there was no one to induce or motivate you to do something won’t you…does that mean that thing will be left undone…even Jesus himself basked the people to do it themselves… Lol just thinking alout..thanks for being here….. Peace

  5. Self motivation ofcourse, is the “quickest” and the easiest form of drive that can push you to action. But sometimes, we also need an external push cos there may be time when you’ll want to do sumtin, and you find yourself doubting whether it can be realize. Those moments, words like “You can do it” does makes a big difference.

  7. I’ve always said there’s a difference between what people say, and what they eventually do.
You recite our national anthems (both stanzas) and the pledge, and yet there’s no visible change. The ethnic bigotry still exists, corruption has it’s personal quarters, and mediocrity it’s own house in aso rock. Perhaps what we are most in need of is a change of mindset and attitude. When we cam successfully manage that (maybe in another 5 generations) we’ll begin to see positive improvements in our country.
But as always it begins with me and you making a difference in our immediate environment.

Don’t lose hope in our country. It’s all we have.

  8. Hi Uju….thanks for being here and finding this piece worth your time

“Perhaps what we are most in need of is a change of mindset and attitude”.
This has always been my mindset and advocacy and I hope someday a greater population of Nigerians will come to realise that the change we seek begins from within.

“corruption has it’s personal quarters, and mediocrity it’s own house in aso rock”.
We built that comfort zone for them by our very doing of accepting to satisfy our immediate need even when its obvious that immediate satisfaction will cos us long suffering….I capture this thought in a poem I wrote ” our deed”. On this blog.
Nicely said but make GEJ catch you…
